Let's get real, this is what we get asked about by almost every one of our patients'. Hopefully this answers some FAQ's.
Tooth Whitening:
How does tooth whitening work?
The only effective way to whiten teeth is using a bleaching agent – usually peroxide-based. The peroxide breaks down into tiny molecules that move inside the tooth structure, where they break-down any discolored
protein chains. This process whitens the entire tooth, but does not have any effect on existing fillings or prostheses.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes. Clinical studies have shown that bleaching with a peroxide-based agent, under the supervision of a dental professional is safe for the oral and peri-oral tissues.
Will bleaching cause tooth sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity is a common side-effect of bleaching. This sensitivity is transient and should disappear after bleaching is completed. Talk to your oral health professional about desensitizing treatments, such as Potassium Nitrate and Fluoride, which help to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.
There are many ways to whiten your smile:
Teeth can be whitened in-office while you wait, or gently while you sleep over a few nights.
Whether you’d like to whiten just that one stubborn tooth, or that WOW effect with an immediately brighter smile, Sasolburg Dental Studio has the answer for you.
Longevity of teeth whitening procedures
Results differ based on nutrition and lifestyle habits, but the literature shows that results are stable for around 2 years after treatment. There is a myriad of options available to top-up the whitening, and various brightening agents which may be used to maintain the result.
Important:
Talk to your dental professional about the best whitening treatment for your smile, budget and lifestyle. Because teeth whiten at different rates, and your whitening experience will be unique, we recommend a dental consultation prior to whitening. This helps to establish reasonable expectations for your treatment and ensures that your whitening experience is as safe and comfortable as possible. Dental supervision includes an initial diagnosis, professional teeth cleaning, a briefing on the selected whitening process and monitoring throughout treatment.
