You've just been through the discomfort of an extraction, and the dentist starts rattling off a list of do's and don'ts - I've been there, and I couldn't remember any of what they said, which is why I put together a handy reminder for my patients':
Post-extraction wound care instructions:
1) Bite on the gauze/swab for the next 1 hour. Should you experience oozing from the socket later in the day, bite firmly on a normal teabag.
2) For the next 24 hours; no rinsing, no gargling, no spitting, no smoking. This is done to maintain the integrity of the blood clot.
3) Chew on the side opposite to where the extraction was done. It is safe to eat and drink 2 hours after the extraction. Just be careful not to chew your lip or cheek while numb.
4) Depending on the advice given by your dentist, start drinking the analgesics (except disprin/aspirin or Grandpa) and antibiotics 2 hours after the extraction.
5) Oral hygiene measures like brushing and flossing are strongly recommended on the day of extraction. Just be gentle around the extraction site, and do not spit out excess toothpaste forcefully.
6) Begin rinsing with salt-water or a medicated mouthwash 24 hours after the extraction, and continue for 7 days.
7) Should you experience pain, especially if the pain worsens daily and peaks on day 2-4, kindly contact us on 016 976 0436, so that we can investigate for the possibility of a septic socket.
8) Return as directed for review or removal of sutures.
